What is Toyotec’s Micro-Cylindrical Lens?

TOYOTEC’s micro cylindrical lens is manufactured using precision glass spherical machining, achieving an extremely small radius of curvature of R1.65.
With our proprietary processing technology, we realize high surface accuracy at the 0.3 µm level (less than one Newton ring / PV λ/2).
This technology delivers high optical performance while maintaining cost efficiency and suitability for mass production.

Challenges Before Implementation

The customer was seeking a micro cylindrical lens for LiDAR (laser scan type) emitter systems.
In particular, for FAC / SAC lenses used in LiDAR projection optics, they faced challenges related to performance limitations, cost constraints, and concerns over supply interruptions caused by geopolitical risks.

Why TOYOTEC?

Long-standing customers often say, “When it comes to cylindrical lenses, TOYOTEC is the first choice.
TOYOTEC is especially valued for its ability to provide practical, production-ready design proposals from the early development stage, based on the following strengths:

Development Story

“We wanted to create a truly unique lens processing technology—something only TOYOTEC could deliver to the world.”

That vision sparked the development of our new micro cylindrical lens solution.

TOYOTEC has long specialized in glass cylindrical lenses manufactured using a proprietary methods. This method allows for low-cost production of long cylindrical lenses and has been trusted by clients both in Japan and overseas for decades. Now, the original inventor of that technology has teamed up with engineers in both Japan and China to adapt and refine the process for high-precision micro cylindrical lenses, taking it all the way to mass production.

We had received many customer inquiries over the years regarding micro lenses. However, the only available method for us was glass molding, which came with initial cost challenges. We always believed there must be a better alternative—something more flexible and cost-effective—and that belief is what led us to this innovation.

What Is Micro Cylindrical Lens for High-Precision Beam Shaping?

TOYOTEC is developing high-precision micro cylindrical lenses with small curvature radii (R), optimized specifically for laser applications.
This new technology is based on our proprietary manufacturing methods that does not require glass molding.
It achieves submicron-level surface accuracy, making it possible to fabricate deep-R geometries that are difficult to produce using conventional polishing techniques.

These lenses are ideal for:
・Beam shaping in semiconductor laser and LiDAR applications
・Enhancing fiber coupling efficiency and sensor ranging accuracy
・Simplifying optical design while ensuring compatibility with high-volume manufacturing

In addition, these lenses can serve as high-precision preform materials for molded aspherical glass lenses, where precise initial surface accuracy contributes to better molding quality and improved cycle stability.

Key Advantages:
✅ No need for glass molding → Reduces tooling and initial investment costs
✅ Improved beam uniformity → Increases production yield
✅ Greater design flexibility → Enables compact optical module integration
✅ Useful as glass molding preforms → Ensures high form fidelity and repeatable performance

Sample are available now.
If you’re exploring high-performance and cost-efficient solutions for laser beam control or glass preform supply, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Challenges Before Implementation
A mirror component used to scan objects such as barcodes by scanning laser light.
Customers who have used metal or glass mirrors have been concerned about “making their products lighter” and “reducing costs”.

Why TOYOTEC?
At Toyotec, we can provide a comprehensive in-house service, from fabricating mold tooling to form the mirror surface of the plastic lens (the process of forming the mirror shape), we can also provide a reflective coating (the process of applying a coating layer that enhances the reflective performance) to the molded plastic lens.

When considering to switch from metal or glass lens to plastic lens, while there are expectations of weight reduction and cost reduction, there are also technical issues such as adhesion strength, parts cosmetic quality and processing difficulty.
Another issue is that in the manufacture of plastic mirrors, the injection molding and coating processes are sometimes carried out by different companies.
In this case,

● It is unclear which process is the cause when a part/product defect occurs
● There is a risk of misalignment or inconsistency between processes, which can lead to a deterioration in parts cosmetic yield
and other problems are likely to occur.

In response to these issues, the customer adopted a proposal from Toyotec’s integrated system.
This enabled the realization of plastic mirrors by making use of the knowledge of molding and coating technologies that Toyotec has cultivated over many years.

Prospects for the Future Based on the Effects and Changes Resulting from the Introduction of the System
Plastic has a greater degree of freedom in terms of component shape than glass lens, and by changing from glass to plastic mirrors, we have been able to reduce the number of components.
However, when molding and coating are carried out by different suppliers, it is common for problems to occur, such as unstable quality and poor yield.
Toyotec solves these issues through integrated production. We prevent problems that are likely to occur in parts cosmetic and environmental testing by carrying out optimal manufacturing in-house.
Furthermore, we have also succeeded in meeting demands for precision (surface precision, angle) that were previously difficult to achieve, and we have received high praise from our customers for this.

Toyotec Solutions
We have a system in place that allows us to provide one-stop molding and coating services for plastic mirrors.
This integrated approach has achieved the following results

●Providing lightweight, cost-effective plastic mirrors
●Solving issues with parts cosmetic yield

Toyotec will continue to work closely with our customers to propose the most suitable solutions. We will continue to meet our customers’ expectations through the manufacture of high-quality plastic mirrors.

Challenges Before Implementation
When capturing images of a large area at a limited distance from an object, the customer had difficulty calibrating the software to correct the distortion of the images captured with a wide-angle lens. With ultra-wide angle lenses such as fisheye lenses, the edges of the image were shrunk, making it difficult to recognize feature points, and correcting distortion in high-resolution images caused delays in the real-time image.

Why TOYOTEC and RDL?
We received an inquiry about RDL through an introduction of VR/AR system development company that was aware of the customer’s challenges and TOYOTEC’s technology. In addition, TOYOTEC is capable not only of designing special lenses such as RDLs, but also of customizing design specifications to meet the customer’s needs.

Prospects for the Future Based on the Effects and Changes Resulting from the Introduction of the System
Although we are still in the introduction study stage, the actual test simulation has reduced the burden of calibration for distortion correction. We have received feedback that this technology will become even more necessary with the introduction of high-resolution cameras in the future.

Although we are still in the introduction study stage, the actual test simulation has reduced the burden of calibration for distortion correction. We have received feedback that this technology will become even more necessary with the introduction of high-resolution cameras in the future.

Challenges Before Implementation
The customer was looking for lens units to efficiently focus laser light for their Scientific Analyzer. TOYOTEC had been consulting with the customer on a number of projects as a partner from conception to design and production realization.

Why TOYOTEC?
In addition to the custom design and manufacturing of the lens unit, TOYOTEC analyzed and verified the unexplained behavior of the light. By analyzing the phenomena and providing optical simulations, we were able to achieve optimal product development.

Prospects for the Future Based on the Effects and Changes Resulting from the Introduction of the System
TOYOTEC worked with the customer to develop the optimum solution for downsizing the machine and improving the efficiency of the optical system, and realized the commercialization of products with the required specifications. TOYOTEC has been supporting the production realization of optical designs for the customer for 20 years.
