There are three main types: mechanical (rotating), solid-state, and MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system). Mechanical systems are prone to failure due to moving mechanical parts and are relatively expensive. Solid-state systems are becoming more compact and mechanical-less, eliminating the need for driving parts, and solid-state systems are increasingly replacing mechanical parts with semiconductor and optical technologies.
