The difference is the type of structure on the side that scans the laser beam. There are three main types: mechanical (rotating), solid-state, and MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system). Mechanical systems are prone to failure due to moving mechanical parts and are relatively expensive. Solid-state systems are becoming more compact and mechanical-less, eliminating the need for driving parts, and solid-state systems are increasingly replacing mechanical parts with semiconductor and optical technologies. Of these, Flash LiDAR uses optical technology to emit an array of light, and MEMS uses semiconductor technology to integrate everything into a single device.<\/p>\n
